How fluoride treatment works
Fluoride pulls minerals back into enamel that’s starting to weaken, a process called remineralisation, before a soft spot has the chance to turn into a cavity you can see. We simply paint a fluoride varnish onto the teeth after cleaning. It sets on contact with saliva, so there’s no waiting around with a mouthguard full of gel.
Who benefits most from fluoride treatment
Kids with deep grooves in their molars, a history of cavities, low fluoride in their tap water, or braces get the most out of regular fluoride treatment. We’ll gently flag it at your child’s check-up if we think they’re in a higher-risk group, it’s simply extra protection, nothing to worry about.
Is fluoride treatment safe for children
Yes, completely. For prevention of cavities, The American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry recommends professionally applied fluoride for any individual at risk of cavities. The professional-strength dose we apply is tiny, a fraction of what’s in a tube of toothpaste. We just ask parents to hold off on food and drink for 30 minutes afterwards so it has time to work.
