Frequently Asked Questions
Preventive Care FAQs
Infant & Toddler exams
-
We recommend bringing your child in by their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears - to start gentle, healthy habits for life.
-
Your child's first visit is all about prevention and building comfort. We will equip you with the knowledge you need to care for your child’s smile at home. This includes practical advice on preventing decay, effective brushing and flossing techniques, and the role of diet in preventing cavities. The dentist will also check your child’s gums, cheeks, tongue, and teeth, and answer any concerns you may have.
-
You may prepare your child for the dentist with fun activities at home, like role-playing or reading books together. But if you prefer, just leave it to us! Our team is expert at helping little ones feel safe and happy from the moment they arrive.
Professional Cleanings
-
We recommend a professional cleanings every four to six months to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy and strong.
-
Not at all! Our paediatric team uses gentle tools and explains each step to keep the experience calm, comfortable, and even fun.
-
Encourage and help with daily brushing, flossing, and healthy snacks - small habits that make a big difference for growing smiles.
Fluoride Treatments
-
Yes! Fluoride is completely safe when applied professionally in the right amount. Our team uses child-specific doses to strengthen teeth and provide lasting protection.
-
We recommend every six months during routine check-ups, though the exact frequency may vary based on your child’s cavity risk and needs.
-
A little - our fluoride is pleasantly flavoured. Most kids actually enjoy the taste!
Dental Sealants
-
Sealants can be applied as early as 2 years old depending on the needs of the child.
-
Absolutely. Dental sealants are completely safe and approved for prevention of decay in children and adults.
-
Sealants can protect teeth for more than two years with good brushing and regular dental checkups. Your dentist can easily reapply them if needed.
Restorative Care FAQs
-
Yes - tooth-coloured fillings are completely safe and made from biocompatible materials. They restore strength and protect against future decay without affecting how teeth look or feel.
-
With good oral care and routine dental visits, tooth-coloured fillings can last many years before needing any touch-ups or replacements.
-
We take special care to keep your child relaxed and comfortable. Most children feel little to no discomfort, and if needed, we use gentle numbing to make sure the procedure is easy and stress-free.
Tooth-Coloured Fillings
Cavity Stopping Treatments
-
Not at all. The treatment is quick, completely painless, and doesn’t require any drilling or injections.
-
Yes - the treated area may darken in colour. This change is only cosmetic and doesn’t affect healthy tooth areas.
-
SDF offers long-lasting protection. Your dentist may reapply it at regular checkups to keep the treated tooth from getting worse.
Dental Crowns
-
A crown may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling - for example, after a large cavity or crack. It helps restore the tooth’s function and protect it from further decay.
-
Yes - crowns made for baby (primary) teeth are completely safe. They protect and preserve the tooth until it’s ready to fall out naturally, helping maintain the right spacing for adult teeth.
-
We offer both tooth-coloured and stainless-steel crowns, chosen based on your child’s needs and which tooth is being restored. Tooth-coloured options blend naturally for a seamless smile.
Ongoing & Special Care FAQs
Lip & Tongue Tie Release
-
A lip or tongue tie happens when a small band of tissue limits movement, which can make it harder for a baby or child to feed or speak clearly. The gentle procedure to correct this is called a frenectomy. It helps restore natural movement and supports healthy oral development.
-
No - it’s a quick, gentle treatment performed with great care for little ones. Babies and children stay comfortable throughout, and most recover quickly with little to no discomfort.
-
Many parents notice improvements in feeding or movement almost immediately. Speech and muscle coordination often continue to strengthen naturally in the days and weeks that follow.
Space Maintainer
-
When a baby tooth is lost early, a space maintainer gently keeps the gap open so the adult tooth can grow into its proper place.
-
It usually stays in place until the permanent tooth is ready to come through, helping guide healthy, natural alignment.
-
Not at all. It might feel a little different at first, but children adjust quickly - many forget they’re even wearing it after a day or two.
Sedation Dentistry
-
Yes. Dental sedation for children is very safe when provided by trained professionals. We carefully choose the type and dose based on your child’s age, health, and comfort level to make sure every visit feels calm and reassuring.
-
We provide gentle options tailoured to each child - from mild nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) that helps them relax, to deeper sedation when needed for longer or more complex treatments. Our team will always discuss the best and safest option for your child.
Special Needs Support
-
We take time before each visit to talk with parents and understand their child’s individual needs. Together, we create an experience that feels calm, supportive, and positive - for both the child and their family.
-
Yes - parents are always welcome to stay nearby. Having you close helps your child feel safe, secure, and supported throughout their appointment.
-
We offer extra time, gentle communication, and a calm approach to help reduce stress and build trust. If needed, safe sedation options are available to make each visit as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
Orthodontics
-
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial screening around age 7, when permanent teeth begin to come in. Early checkups help guide healthy growth and catch small issues before they become complex.
-
We provide early assessments on jaw development, and space analysis, so as to avoid unnecessary extractions or surgeries down the line.
We then guide the adult teeth into position with fixed braces (metal or ceramic) or invisible ones (Invisalign).
Our orthodontist creates beautiful smiles for adults too!
-
Our patient-focused approach ensures every adjustment is as comfortable and stress-free as possible, helping you and your child feel at ease throughout treatment.
